Toronto, ON (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

Crawford Technologies has expanded its network by adding Perficient, Inc. to its rapidly expanding list of partners. Through this new partnership, Crawford Technologies’ state-of-the-art, enterprise content management software solutions will be now available to Perficient’s customers.

Perficient supported CrawfordTech’s PRO Archiver technology when it was previously known as EMC Archive Services for Reports (ASR). ASR was acquired by Crawford Technologies in 2010 and has been further developed and renamed PRO Archiver. As a premier EMC partner, Perficient has been helping EMC Documentum customers solve their archiving challenges for more than 10 years.

“We are very excited about adding Perficient to our partner program,” said Ernie Crawford, President of Crawford Technologies. “Perficient’s customers will now have easy access to enabling technology like PRO Archiver and the benefits it brings to EMC Documentum users.”

CrawfordTech’s PRO Archiver software enables organizations to leverage mainframe reports and customer communications as information assets within their ECM systems. Reports become available throughout an organization and across the Web to meet increased availability requirements. PRO Archiver mitigates compliance risk and lowers infrastructure costs by leveraging retention policy services and lifecycle managed storage.

CrawfordTech’s recent acquisition of ASE Technologies in Boston, the developer of the Riptide Server, provides additional solutions for Perficient to bring to their customer base. Riptide Server allows ECM users to more easily leverage the assets they have stored in ECM systems by outputting documents of mixed formats to email, print, fax, PDF or dynamic link, eliminating the need for the originating applications.

“Businesses today are under tremendous pressure to ‘do more with less’ and yet still provide meaningful information to customers, partners and internal operations,” said Ed Rawson, general manager of Perficient’s ECM group.

“With the right enterprise content management strategy in place, organizations can dramatically reduce costs and increase productivity by streamlining content-related production and processes. We’re pleased to partner with Crawford Technologies to continue helping our clients manage and locate content that is required to make informed business decisions.”

Nambour, Queensland (PRWEB) March 08, 2012

Forecast For Tomorrow, a leading trend forecaster, has today warned of a possible banking crisis and further destabilization of global economies. Forecast For Tomorrow has earned a distinguished reputation in the industry through accurate, insightful forecasting of world-shaking events before they happen.

Forecast For Tomorrow identifies trends and has forecasted world-shaking events far ahead of time. Events accurately predicted by the group include the election of Barak Obama as US president in 2008, as well as the stock market crash of 2008 and the swine flu pandemic outbreak. Their accurate predictions have provided sound protection for thousands of people, allowing them to protect their wealth and even increase their financial standing substantially at times when others are losing everything.

This week they have revealed that even though the economy is struggling right now, big companies and directors are thinking out of the box to raise their revenues and get there name out there.

Even if it seems counter intuitive, the hottest trend right now is giving away games for free and then start funneling those free subscribers into a more intimate interaction environment for a fee.

While this seems like a silly idea, think about some of the bigger companies making a small fortune with this simple marketing approach.

By offering well known games and titles for free, everyone is after a bargain right now. Then the publishers are able to work in small fee based strategies and offers into their freebies. This is becoming quite popular and highly effective.

After recent studies conducted by Park Associates, it was found that 10 to 15 percent of gamers on facebook, spend about $ 29 per month. And some of those paying users will pay for upgrades also.

Producers do not force user to pay upfront, their strategy is to restrict the free play in specific ways so that encourages the user to pay a fee or monthly subscription, and it seems to be working a very well.

The first of those games to make the switch — “DC Universe” — added 1 million players in the first week. The transition was so successful that John Smedley, president of the unit, was forced to take to Twitter to apologize for lag and login issues, noting: “Very bluntly, this has been a wee bit more successful than we planned on.”

So even in a struggling economy there seems to be a new trend of thinking “outside the box” to make money and to get your name out there.

San Diego, California (PRWEB) May 14, 2012

‘Til SAXX Underwear popped-up on the hi-fashion radar, the design of men’s skivvies hadn’t changed much in the last 75-years.

But every once in a while, an all-new, technological breakthrough comes along that’s so revolutionary it catapults an entire product category out of its horse-and-buggy stage and into its space age. Therein the saga of SAXX Underwear, an upstart Canadian company whose technological breakthrough has turned the underwear industry inside-out and completely re-jiggered the taken-for-granted design of men’s boxer briefs.

Despite an exterior that’s near-identical to traditional boxer briefs, SAXX is the most revolutionary make-over in men’s underwear since 1934, the year briefs made their traffic-stopping debut in a Michigan Avenue-facing window of Chicago’s Marshall Fields. In the nearly 80-years since, the design of men’s briefs hasn’t changed significantly.

SAXX – thanks to an ingeniously designed, hammock-like inner pouch – is proof that a simple inspiration of genius can spark a quantum leap ahead that then catapults an entire genre into its space age.

SAXX’s own genesis – born from underwear’s annoying discomfort – also proves that necessity-is-the-mother-of-invention. And that great gifts do, indeed, come in small packages. Or in this case, SAXX.

In brief, SAXX is a problem solving, super action hero that has eliminated nearly all the faults and flaws of traditional boxer briefs.

Here’s what SAXX does, what SAXX doesn’t do, along with the how-and-why its one-of-a-kind, ergonomically engineered interior “comfort pouch” works its magic. For starters, SAXX delivers a level of comfort that’s unrivaled. Counting 13 different silhouettes and styles, every pair of SAXX is cooler and delivers far more protection from contact maladies. Chafing, nagging rashes and aggravating skin irritations suddenly disappear, or are dramatically reduced. Even troublesome ingrown hairs, and their threat of infection, along with the sudden, painful twinge of pinched skin and other annoying discomforts, instantly vanish.

Secret to SAXX’s magic is an ergonomically engineered, never-before-seen, spandex mesh interior pouch that ingeniously eliminates leg contact. Visualize this: Hammock-like support pocket – a suspension bridge of sorts — built into your boxer-briefs that lifts and supports while it protects. Knit from “smart fibers” that are both hygroscopic and thermal-reactive, its ingeniously designed architecture doubles as a thermo-regulator. Body heat zips away, helping keep the body cucumber-cool and at peak-performance, whether its summer’s hottest day or the heated contest of competitive sport. Bacteria and fungus producing perspiration, too, are wicked away at record speeds, helping eliminate everything from “jock itch” to embarrassing body odor, and everything in between.

Underwear is one of fashion’s most unique curiosities, if not its oddest paradox. Unlike color and design driven fashion, underwear is first and foremost, utilitarian and pragmatic. On the other hand, today’s underwear is, more-and-more, a style driven fashion statement. Now, underwear has to be a hi-performing sports action hero and, at the same time, ooze gobs of sex appeal and he-man charisma. Therein the challenge that SAXX answers handsomely and with unrivaled aplomb.

No one-trick pony, Saxx touts four fashion colors and gobs of he-hunk sex appeal throughout its 13 different styles and silhouettes that includes trunks and mid-thigh boxer briefs to knee skimming “long legs” and sports performance long johns. All are hi-fashion, sports brutes boasting a never-before-experienced level of comfort.

About SAXX Underwear: Founded in 2005 by Trent Kitsch, SAXX’s ergonomically engineered design — still light-years ahead of even today’s most technically advanced underwear — was created from a single, simple design mission: End the annoying discomforts of men’s underwear and dramatically elevate its comfort level.

In 2006, the twentysomething Kitsch debuted SAXX at his University cafeteria, selling all 200 prototypes in a matter of minutes to fellow students.

Kitsch’s inspiration was born from the rash and discomforting skin irritations he experienced wearing a survival suit, round the clock, on a three-day fishing trip off Alaska’s coast. Once home, he assembled a small design team and created the hi-tech concept that rocketed SAXX to the forefront and comfort-leadership of men’s underwear: A patented, ergonomically engineered “comfort pouch” touting two, parallel and adjoining mesh panels stealthily tucked inside a traditional looking boxer brief. An ingeniously designed, hammock-like suspension bridge, of sorts, SAXX’s patented comfort pouch delivers a bevy of comfort and health-promoting advantages that handily trump any-and-all of today’s underweardesigns.

For starters, it lifts and supports. But more importantly, it eliminates skin abrasions, heat rashes, chafing and a myriad of other sweat and heat caused skin irritations by separating and preventing contact between the inner-thighs and testicles. At the same time, its mesh panels deliver cooling comfort and odor-thwarting ventilation.

Knit from “smart fibers,” SAXX is both hygroscopic and thermal-reactive. Translation is that body heat zips away, helping keep the body cucumber-cool and at peak-performance. Bacteria and fungus producing perspiration, too, are wicked away at record speeds, which helps eliminate “jock itch” to embarrassing body odor, and everything in between.

Today, SAXX Underwear Company touts 13 different styles and silhouettes in its product array, ranging from classic boxer brief to trunks, knee length long legs and sports-geared long-johns. Sold in over 500 men’s specialty and luxury retailers throughout the U.S. and Canada, including Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom stores, retail prices range from $ 24.95 for trunks and boxer briefs to $ 57.95 for SAXX sports-performance LongJohns.

Photometer Calibration Standards Kit 1

Farmingdale, NY (PRWEB) May 03, 2012

Despite the simplicity of the concept of photometry for measuring light intensity, it is a very complicated and delicate process. In addition, photometers are often expensive and may be difficult to use. These devices are often found in chemistry, biology and industrial laboratories and are utilized for data evaluation and study.

One of the major concerns for scientists is the need to have accurate photometer calibration standards. Calibration standards are needed for the quality assurance and accuracy of readings. If calibration standards are not precise then there is a high potential for inaccurate results and analysis. In effect, inexact laboratory results wastes valuable time and resources.

Optimum photometer calibration standards are obtained by using filters that are recognized by the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST), USA. Equally, it is important that a calibration standard is not only NIST traceable but is NIST compatible. In fact, NIST traceable may not be adequate for the correct calibration of a photometer. Likewise, NIST traceable filters do not guarantee any data for the tolerances of neutral density (ND) filters which includes temperature, humidity environments, incident light-angle sensitivity, wavelengths deviation and optical density variation. On the contrary, ND filters that are NIST compatible are essential for the most accurate calibration.

Locating an optimum photometer calibration standard may be challenging for a laboratory but it is crucial for obtaining precise readings. Most photometer calibration standards are NIST traceable but not NIST compatible. A leading quartz manufacturer that specializes in calibration standards as well as the design and fabrication of the highest quality fire fused cuvettes, microfluidic chips and superior flow cells is NSG Precision Cells. At NSG, photometer calibration standards are NIST traceable and NIST compatible. Furthermore, NSG provides exclusive products that not only match NIST-930e standards but often exceeds them.

NSG Precision Cells is a leader in the cuvette industry and with over 50 years of experience, NSG provides the only spectrophotometer calibration standard that can calibrate in both the visible (Vis) range and ultraviolet (UV). Their exclusive FUV-0.5 calibration filter can be used for wavelengths between (200-700 nm) for both photometric accuracy and stray light. As well, NSG offers custom manufacturing of VIS, UV and infrared (IR) photometer calibration standards.

With innovative technology and knowledge, NSG Precision Cells is highly skilled in manufacturing and designing quartz products that are dependable and second to none. In fact, their photometer calibration standards are unsurpassed in the market. Some of the wide arrays of benefits include the following; never need to be replaced, exact calibration every time, NIST compatible and traceable, easy to clean and user friendly, long-lasting and scratch resilient.

Also NSG’s photometer stds will work with all spectrophotometers that have a standard 12.5 x 12.5 mm cuvette holder. These standards meet or exceed NIST-930e standards and they never need recalibration.

One of NSG’s most recent products is the wavelength calibration standards. It is utilized for photometric accuracy in UV wavelength range and wavelength calibration in UV and Vis wavelength ranges. The WAV-7 wavelength calibration standard has trace-tables for 2nm spectral bandwidths as well as other spectral bandwidths that can be custom made. Some of the numerous features of the WAV-7 include:

Thermally stable
Remarkably diffuse
Filter never degrades
Unwavering reflectance
Never needs to be recalibrated
NIST compatible and NIST traceable
Easy to clean and exceptionally durable
Can be custom made to fit a laboratories needs
Never needs replaced and has an extensive lifespan

NSG’s unique photometer calibration standards are a revolutionary advancement in Nano technology. The state-of-the-art standards provide scientific laboratories the solution to quality samples and cost-effective results. In fact, NSG Precision Cells photometer calibration standards are the best in the silicon industry. Either meeting or exceeding NIST guidelines, the NSG photometer calibration standards are ideal for absolute precision and peak performance.

Simply Organic, the all-organic brand of Frontier Natural Products Co-op, has reached the 59-product mark in its quest to meet the booming demand of consumers wanting gluten-free foods. The items are all organic and many of them are also Fair Trade Certified™. In addition, Simply Organic offers many other products, such as spices and extracts that, while not certified, are naturally gluten-free.

Gluten-free products are in high demand due to a growing awareness of gluten sensitivity (also known as gluten intolerance), which affects more than 15% of the population. It’s believed that about 1 in 133 people have the medically recognized advanced form of the sensitivity, celiac disease, though only 1 in 4700 are ever diagnosed.

Gluten-sensitivity symptoms range from mild and barely noticeable to severe and include gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, as well as other non-digestive symptoms such as headache, joint pain, depression, anxiety, and fatigue. These symptoms arise as a result of an immune system reaction to two proteins found in wheat — gliadin and glutenin — and similar proteins found in barley, spelt, rye and triticale.

Simply Organic’s 59 gluten-free products meet the gluten-free standard implemented by the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Production Act (FALCPA) as well as the high product standards of the brand.

Miami, Florida (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

A newly published study investigating the dietary association of nutrients and cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s, more specifically nutrients such as saturated fat, monounsaturated fatty acid (Omega-9, found in olive oil), polyunsaturated fatty acids of Omega-3 and Omega-6, vitamin E, vitamin C, Beta-carotene, vitamin B-12, folate (B-9) and vitamin D, suggests that Omega-3 resulted in better protection against elevated levels of Abeta 40-42, proteins associated with development and progression of Alzheimer’s.

This recent study incorporated a group of nutrients, all of which are thought to confer protection against Alzheimer’s.

Beta Carotene (precursor to vitamin A), vitamin E and vitamin C are all known for their anti-oxidant properties and countering oxidative stress. Compelling evidence has associated oxidative process to neuro-degeneration and the development of diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Anti-oxid Redox Signal. 2012 Jan 18.

Oxidative stress denotes lack of adequate anti-oxidant defense (redox imbalance). Anti-oxidants generally help in neutralizing free radicals, molecules that damage the cells. Abeta 42, a major cause of early-onset familial Alzheimer’s has been associated with oxidative stress both in vitro and in vivo, in addition to which, it has been suggested that oxidative stress increases the precursor to Abeta 40-42. (1)

While lack of vitamin D has been more associated with the development of osteoporosis but a recent study has suggested that vitamin D3 helps in Alzheimer’s by activating cell signaling networks that could clear away plaques, formed by Abeta 40-42. Journal of Alzheimer’s. Vol. 29, No. 1, March 2012.

Vitamins B-9 (folate) and B-12 are both methyl donors. Methyl is a nutrient found in vitamins B-6, B-9 and B-12, as well as Choline. Methyl reduces the levels of another damaging protein (Homocysteine), which is considered to be an independent risk factor in Alzheimer’s and dementia but correlated with Abeta levels. Studies have shown that an increment in the blood homocysteine level (5 μmol per liter) increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 40 percent. (2)

While Omega-6 is a pro-inflammatory nutrient, found in red meat, and its excess consumption has been associated with degenerative conditions, Alzheimer included, but a recent study has proposed that a mixture of Omega-6 and Omega-9 alters the production of Abeta 40-42, the two key proteins blamed for Alzheimer’s. J Neurosci Res. 2011 Nov;89(11).

Saturated fat (high fat diet) has been suggested to decrease memory and learning through reducing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), proteins that support survival of brain cells.(3)

While “practically” all of the nutrients, selected in this study, have been previously suggested by other recent or landmark studies to confer protective properties against Alzheimer’s, but when compared to Omega-3 none seems to be more effective or even as effective in protection against the formation of plaques, a key and specific cause of Alzheimer’s. Plaques from Abeta 40-42 result in ultimate death of brain cells responsible for memory.

Of the important Omega-3 Fatty Acids, DHA fatty acids is precursor to Neuro-Protectin D-1 (NPD-1). Studies have shown that NPD-1 (a DHA-derived 10,17S-docosatriene) promotes brain cell survival via the induction of neuroprotective gene-expression programs that suppress Abeta42-induced neurotoxicity as well as opposing pre-mature death of brain cells. (4)

DHA Omega Fatty Acids is referred to as brain’s essential fatty acids.

DHA is also a precursor to Resolvin D, molecules that resolve inflammation in the brain. Numerous studies have suggested that chronic inflammation enhances the production of Abeta 40-42, suggesting a link between excessive pro-inflammatory agents and Alzheimer’s disease. Omega-3 Fatty Acids of EPA and DHA are anti-inflammatory nutrients, not only beneficial in resolution of the inflammation in the brain but also in resolving systemic inflammation.

In conclusion, Nutri-Med Logic Corp agreeing with this study adds that adequate dietary supplementation of Omega-3 not only lowers the Abeta 40-42, proteins that damage brain cells, but also it resolves the inflammation in the brain, protects the brain cells from oxidative stress-induced cell injury and premature death.

Nutri-Med Logic Corp is the producer of the Natural, Balanced, Deodorized, Concentrated and Pharmaceutical Grade Omega-3. Omega-3 is the most effective anti-inflammatory nutrient.

Nutri-Med Logic Corp is also a producer of dietary supplements such as a Pharmaceutical Grade R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (the natural type of Lipoic Acid), a universal anti-oxidant and the dietary supplement of choice for the Diabetics, in Germany for decades;

Producer of PolyEnylPhosphatidylCholine (PPC 425mg), an extract of soy, a pure and effective dietary source of choline and the recommended dietary supplement for those with Fatty Liver and Alcoholic Liver Disease, in Europe for decades.

Nutri-Med Logic’s products are Formulated Based on Nutritional Logic, made from the highest quality raw materials that are manufactured in pharmaceutical facilities, encapsulated in pharmaceutical facilities and packaged in pharmaceutical facilities.

Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) May 07, 2012

RootMetrics™ announced today the latest New Orleans RootScore™ Report and corresponding RootScore Awards. Complementing consumer-generated results from the RootMetrics CoverageMap app, the RootMetrics scout team professionally tests how the carriers perform in cities across the country. The New Orleans report analyzes results from more than 6,700 real-world data, call and text tests on the AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon networks. Verizon turned in an especially strong performance in New Orleans: their 19.7 Mbps average download speed was the fastest that the carrier has recorded to date and, as they did in the most recent New York RootScore report, Verizon’s LTE network swept all of the RootMetrics testing categories in New Orleans.

This is RootMetrics’ second RootScore Report for New Orleans, having previously tested the area in November 2011. Since that time, both Verizon and AT&T showed remarkable increase in average data speeds. Sprint’s data speeds held steady with the November results, while T-Mobile’s data speeds significantly decreased compared to RootMetrics’ last visit.

Across the country, RootMetrics is increasingly seeing Verizon and AT&T compete for the claim of fastest data network. Though AT&T now offers LTE service in New Orleans, Verizon’s average download and average upload data speed tests consistently outpaced AT&T. RootMetrics continues to compare the LTE performance of Verizon and AT&T whenever possible.

“With every city we test, we are laser focused on sharing relevant data that helps people find the best wireless network to suit their individual needs,” said Bill Moore, CEO of RootMetrics. “It’s great that LTE is available in New Orleans, but we wanted to check how often LTE is accessible and let people know what speeds they will find in real-world conditions. And although data speed is a significant factor, we know people may want to look at voice and text results, as well.”

Which Carrier Came Out on Top?

RootMetrics sorts results to share with consumers which carrier provided the fastest and most reliable data network, which carrier had the fewest blocked and dropped calls and which carrier offered the fastest text service.

•Data Performance: The RootMetrics data performance tests analyzed how fast each carrier’s network was able to download and upload files and how often a customer could successfully connect to the data network.

Verizon’s LTE network easily outpaced all other carriers’ networks, with an average download speed of 19.7 Mbps and an average upload speed of 10.6 Mbps. Though AT&T’s LTE network easily claimed second place for average download and upload speeds, with an average download speed of 6.3 and an average upload speed of 2.1, they trailed Verizon by a vast margin.

Verizon recorded download speeds above 5 Mbps in 97.8% of tests, compared to second-place AT&T, which recorded download speeds above 5 Mbps in 49.7% of tests.

In contrast, Sprint recorded download speeds below 1.5 Mbps in 97.8% of tests.

Testing showed Verizon as the most reliable data network in New Orleans, with failure rates near or below 0.4%. T-Mobile recorded a failure rate of 14.2%, finishing in last place for this measure.

•Call Performance: Verizon swept all call measures with its perfect performance. Sprint recorded zero dropped calls in New Orleans. T-Mobile finished last in the call category, with a 7% failure rate.

•Text Performance: To replicate the most typical user experience, RootMetrics compared how long it took each carrier to receive a single text message. At 3.1 seconds, Verizon recorded with fastest overall receive time. AT&T and Verizon tied for first place in the text receive measure. Sprint placed last in both overall receive time and within network receive time, recording 12.3 seconds for the former and 11.9 for the latter.

•Overall: With the strongest overall performance, Verizon ranked first in the combined standings for New Orleans. The final results are:

1 – Verizon (97.7)

2 – AT&T (63.5)

3—T-Mobile (39.3)

4 – Sprint (36.5)

The May 2012 New Orleans RootScore Report is the latest in an ongoing series of performance measurement reports and corresponding RootScore Awards from RootMetrics. The company will continue to publish additional reports on U.S. wireless markets to help consumers make better decisions about the right carrier for his or her individual needs. Review all RootScore reports at http://www.rootmetrics.com.

To evaluate the New Orleans area, RootMetrics conducted 6,701 call, data and text tests during a five-day period, covering all hours of the day and night, from April 8- April 12, 2012. The real-world tests were conducted using the RootMetrics CoverageMap app running on Android-based, off-the-shelf consumer smartphones from carriers’ stores. To ensure that testing aligns with consumer experience, and to provide each carrier with the chance to rate as highly as possible, RootMetrics utilizes the most advanced smartphones available at the time of testing. Tests centered on activities that consumers perform most often: making phone calls, uploading and downloading files from the Internet, and sending and receiving texts.

Consumers who are interested to see how their network coverage measures up can download the free RootMetrics Cell Phone CoverageMap app for iPhone or Android devices.

Mobile performance varies depending on where people live, work or otherwise spend time.

The results of this report, combined with the geographical coverage maps at http://www.rootmetrics.com and via the Cell Phone CoverageMap app, allow people to make better decisions about the right carrier for their individual needs.

Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) May 06, 2012

The Veterans Affairs (VA) Maryland Health Care System will observe National Nurses Week (May 6-12) with an awards ceremony on May 7, at 3 p.m. in the auditorium at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. Janet D. Allan, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing, will deliver the keynote address on the future of nursing. During the ceremony, nurses will be honored with the VA Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Nursing and the 2012 DAISY Award.

“We consider our nurses—the largest of our workforce at more than 900 strong, of which 700 are RN’s and Nurse Practitioners—to be the compassionate backbone of our health care system,” said Dennis H. Smith, director of the VA Maryland Health Care System. “We are thrilled to honor the dedicated men and women who have mastered the art and science of caring for our nation’s heroes with compassion. No other health care professional is closer to the Veterans we serve than VA nurses. Our patients rely on them for their compassion, and the VA relies on them for setting the highest clinical care standards.”

The VA Maryland Health Care System’s nursing staff includes licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, health technicians and nursing assistants who serve Veterans at three inpatient facilities and six community based outpatient clinics throughout the state. During the ceremony, four nurses will be recognized as the VA Maryland Health Care System’s winners of the Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Nursing. Of the four winners, two will be recognized as the awardees for the VA Capitol Health Care Network, with the nurse that is named as the national VA Secretary Award recipient selected from the pool of Network winners.

The VA Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Nursing consists of three major categories: Excellence in Nursing, Advancement of Nursing Programs by a Medical Center or Health Care System Director, and Advancement of Nursing Programs by a Medical Center or Health Care System Nurse Executive.

During the ceremony, one VA nurse will also be recognized as the DAISY Award recipient. Established by the DAISY Foundation, a non-profit organization designed to eliminate diseases attacking the immune system – in memory of J. Patrick Barnes – the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses recognizes the very special work nurses do every day.

The ceremony’s keynote speaker, Janet Allan, who has served as dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing since June 2002, has emerged as a leader in nursing education. She has collaborated with nurse educators and health care providers to develop the Nurse Support Program II, a 10-year grant program providing $ 10 annually to fund educational initiatives aimed at alleviating the state’s shortage of faculty and bedside nurses. Dean Allan is one of nine nurses in the nation honored by the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Health for contributions to the care of people with AIDS and HIV infection. Allan created a hospice for HIV/AIDS patients that serves as a national model. Many students from the University of Maryland School of Nursing rotate through the VA Maryland Health Care System as part of the VA’s commitment to the training of tomorrow’s clinicians.

# # #

The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) provides a broad spectrum of medical, surgical, rehabilitative, mental health and outpatient care to veterans at two medical centers, one community living & rehabilitation center and five outpatient clinics located throughout the state. More than 52,000 veterans from various generations receive care from the VAMHCS annually. Nationally recognized for its state-of-the-art technology and quality patient care, the VAMHCS is proud of its reputation as a leader in veterans’ health care, research and education. It costs nothing for Veterans to enroll for health care with the VA Maryland Health Care System and it could be one of the more important things a Veteran can do. For information about VA health care eligibility and enrollment or how to apply for a VA medical care hardship to avoid future copayments for VA health care, interested Veterans are urged to call the Enrollment Center for the VA Maryland Health Care System, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1-800-463-6295, ext. 7324 or visit http://www.maryland.va.gov.
