Hinsdale, IL (PRWEB) February 21, 2012

Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s new patient pavilion doesn’t officially open until April, but community members can get an exclusive “sneak peek” of the state-of-the-art space at the hospital’s “Friends & Neighbors Open House.”

Scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. March 25 at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, 120 N. Oak St., this event includes:

     self-guided tours,
a cooking demonstration by Jimmy Bannos from Heaven on Seven
an appearance by the Veggie Tales, and
a string quartet performance by members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

“Since we started planning this project, there has been a groundswell of support and tremendous amount of excitement from our community,” said Michael Goebel, chief executive officer, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “This open house is a unique chance for people to take a behind-the-scenes tour of our new space before it opens to the public.”

The event is free but advance registration is recommended. Register online at https://midwestceii.ahss.org/ceii_web/class/details.asp?class=16879 or by calling 630-856-7525.

Other family-friendly activities planned for the event include a “build your own first aid kit” station and the opportunity to win a Big Green Egg smoker and grill.

Construction of the 100,000 square-foot pavilion began in 2010. The project was designed based on input from neighbors, patients, physicians and hospital staff and complements Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s world-class care and technological advancements.

Among the most notable changes:

private patient suites including private bathrooms and space for overnight guests,
updated nursing units,
corridors that separate patient and visitor traffic for privacy,
a new lobby and Calandra chapel,
updated labor and delivery suites, including some with whirlpool tubs to promote relaxation,
a new covered driveway on Oak Street providing easier access to patient services and registration

Each of the new private patient suites will feature a plasma TV, wireless internet access, comfortable rollout beds for family members, and oversized windows with beautiful views and plenty of natural light. Once the new space opens, the hospital will have 277 beds, reduced from the current licensed bed count of 342.

The pavilion is connected to the existing hospital, allowing for seamless patient navigation throughout. Each floor is divided into four “neighborhoods” that allow nurses to be a maximum of 50 feet from patients at all times.

“Our new pavilion strengthens the nurse-patient relationship by giving our caregivers easy access to patients at the bedside,” said Shawn Tyrrell, chief nursing officer, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “The opening of this space represents the start of a new and exciting chapter in our hospital’s story.”

Adventist Midwest Health includes Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. To find a physician, visit http://www.keepingyouwell.com.

Glendale WI (PRWEB) June 30, 2011

Lymphedema in the lower extremity is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial tissue that causes excessive swelling in the leg(s), and occasionally in other parts of the body. Lymphedema can develop when lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired, or when lymph vessels are damaged or lymph nodes have been removed.

In the United States, the number of Medicare age individuals afflicted with lymphedema, or at risk of developing it, exceeds 6.8 million.

The initiative was announced on Wednesday by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the Family Health and Birth Center in Washington, D.C. Founded by certified nurse-midwife Ruth W. Lubic, CNM, EdD, the birth center has reduced preterm birth and improved maternal and newborn outcomes in medically underserved areas of Washington, D.C.

Strong Start will meet its goals by scaling up efforts to implement strategies already shown to reduce preterm birth, most notably avoiding early elective induction before 39 weeks. It will also fund investigation of innovative models of prenatal care—specifically birth centers, group prenatal care, and maternity care homes—that hold promise for addressing the physical, emotional, and psychosocial factors behind preterm birth.

“We are pleased that CMMI is focusing a national spotlight on maternal and newborn health and the ways care and outcomes can be improved. These new resources will enable midwives and other maternity care providers to implement strategies that reduce preterm birth on a broader scale,” said ACNM President Holly Powell Kennedy, CNM, PhD. “ACNM will play an active role in the public awareness campaign, and we encourage members to apply for funding.”

ACNM members — certified nurse-midwives (CNMS) and certified midwives (CMs) — are well-positioned to play an active role in this initiative. Nationally, CNMs and CMs attend more than 300,000 births every year in hospitals, birth centers, and homes with proven safety and excellent outcomes.

“Research supports the use of midwife-led care models during pregnancy, including birth centers and group prenatal care. We look forward to working on this agenda in future public-private partnerships,” said Kennedy.

For more information, please contact Melissa Garvey, ACNM communications manager at (240) 485-1826 or via e-mail at mgarvey(at)acnm(dot)org.

The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is the professional association that represents certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) in the United States. ACNM promotes excellence in midwifery education, clinical practice, and research. With roots dating to 1929, our members are primary care providers for women throughout the lifespan, with a special emphasis on pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive health. ACNM provides research, administers and promotes continuing education programs, establishes clinical practice standards, and creates liaisons with state and federal agencies and members of Congress to increase the visibility and recognition of midwifery care.

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) February 14, 2012

According to a new survey issued by the Heart Rhythm Society, the majority of Americans are unaware of two serious and potentially life-threatening heart rhythm disorders: atrial fibrillation (AF) and sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). In fact, only one in three Americans have ever heard of AF or recognize the number of lives claimed each year from SCA. Throughout February, Heart Health Month, the Heart Rhythm Society spotlights the need for public education on heart rhythm disorders affecting millions of people, and the specialists best suited to treat them – electrophysiologists.

More than 250,000 deaths occur each year as a result of SCA–more than breast cancer, lung cancer or AIDS. Yet, according to the recent survey, more than 65 percent of Americans not only underestimate the seriousness of SCA, but also believe SCA is a type of heart attack. While this current data does show a 5 percent increase since the Society’s 2008 SCA awareness survey, the lack of awareness remains high and further education is needed. Additionally, more than 2 million people in the United States (U.S.) live with AF. Yet, survey results showed only 50 percent of Americans know AF is a type of heart rhythm disorder.

“The Heart Rhythm Society is committed to helping educate the public about heart health and creating the best possible environment to improve long-term patient care,” said Bruce L. Wilkoff, MD, FHRS, CCDS, president of Heart Rhythm Society. “We want people to become more aware of the life-threatening heart rhythm conditions affecting millions of Americans every day–those that go beyond heart attacks or other well-known types of heart disease. Heart Health Month is a great time to spread the word.”

The Heart Rhythm Society has developed two consumer awareness initiatives to focus on risk assessment, prevention and treatment of SCA and AF. The “Apples and Oranges” campaign explains the differences between SCA and a heart attack, while the “A-Fib Feels Like” campaign brings to light the warning signs of AF and the link between AF and stroke. Altogether, these campaigns provide detailed information to help people become more informed about common heart health issues and the field of electrophysiology.

Know Your Risk: Heart Rhythm Society Prevention Pulse Points

During Heart Health Month, take a close look at heart health and five simple ways to help prevent and seek early treatment for these common heart conditions.

Small Choices, Big Heart Benefits: Live a healthy lifestyle — exercise regularly, eat healthy foods, maintain a healthy weight and avoid smoking to help reduce the chances of heart health problems.
Know Your Rhythm: Pay attention to abnormal heart rhythms — palpitations, fast heart rates, really slow heart rates, fluttering in your chest and shortness of breath can also be signs of rhythm disorders.
By the Numbers: Treat and monitor health conditions that can contribute to heart problems, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
Family First: Know your family medical history and understand the associated risk for other cardiovascular related conditions, like heart failure.
Don’t Skip a Beat: Document your symptoms and discuss them with a clinician/electrophysiologist to determine the best treatment options for you.
Learn More Online: Visit our website, http://www.HRSonline.org, for interactive tips and tools, patient resources and more.

Gain Unique Insights: New Educational Videos Show Real World Impact of AF & SCA

The Society has issued its first ever patient education video series as a resource to address the common misperceptions around heart rhythm disorders. The videos use a mix of real-world footage and animation to help patients and caregivers understand AF and SCA, including the warning signs, treatment options and a symptom tracker. Check out the new videos to learn more: AF Patient Education Video and SCA Patient Education Video.

“We must continue to raise the bar when it comes to educating people about their heart health,” added Dr. Wilkoff. “It is not only important for people to better understand common heart rhythm disorders, but also to know more about the doctors who treat them, called electrophysiologists.”

What is an Electrophysiologist?

There is a special type of heart doctor that treat patients with heart rhythm problems—called an electrophysiologist. Electrophysiologists are cardiologists with advanced medical training to treat problems with the heart’s electrical system, which result in heart rhythm disorders. The electrophysiologist can also help you learn if you or your family members are at risk for life-threatening rhythm disturbances, including SCA and AF. Find one near you by going here.

(PRWEB UK) 25 January 2012

Specsavers, voted Britain’s most trusted optician(1) is reminding motorists and the government of the importance of regular eye examinations for drivers, following an accident involving a driver with poor eye sight that killed a student.

Colin Horsfall, aged 87, ran down and killed teenager Cassie McCord on a pavement after failing an on-the-spot sight test given by a policeman just three days before. Mr Horsfall died of his injuries a month later. Sitting in Chelmsford, coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray recorded a verdict of unlawful killing on Miss McCord and ruled that Mr Horsfall had died as a result of the accident.(2)

Paul Carroll, Specsavers’ director of professional services, says: ‘This was a tragic accident and our thoughts are with Miss McCord’s family and friends.

‘We have worked with road safety charity Brake for a number of years and would again urge the government to support our call for compulsory eye examinations for drivers, at least every two years, and for drivers to carry a spare pair of glasses in their vehicle. If you cannot see the TV at home or read a newspaper you would automatically reach for your glasses, yet to get into your car and drive without them is apparently acceptable. It most definitely is not and we shall continue to work with Brake to prevent more unnecessary deaths on our roads.’

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive at Brake, the road safety charity, says: ‘It is truly horrendous to hear of lives being cut short and families suffering as a result of poor driver eyesight. Drivers need to realise the vital importance of getting their eyes tested at least every two years, even if you think your vision is fine. It’s a key part of your responsibility as a driver to make sure you’re not risking your own life and other people’s. We are also renewing our calls for the government to introduce compulsory eyesight tests, to ensure all drivers are fit for the road and so help prevent further tragedies.’

The appeal follows statistics revealing that one in five road users have never had an eye examination.(3) Furthermore, recent research carried out by Brunel University andRoyal Sun Alliance (RSA) (4) reveals that the quality of a driver’s vision has a fundamental impact on their driving performance. Drivers with poor eyesight are 62 percent more likely to stray out of their lane when driving.

Specsavers has campaigned throughout the past decade for legislation to be introduced to make eye examinations compulsory as part of the driving test. Working with police constabularies across the UK and national road safety charity Brake, Specsavers has toured motor shows and county shows nationwide with its Drive Safe campaign trailer to screen drivers’ vision.

A panel of people with 20:20 vision (6/6 in the metric system) were put through a thorough test in Brunel’s driving simulator. Each person was presented with a range of tasks and hazards over a seven mile route and various aspects of their driving performance recorded. Total sample size was 2021 adults, of which 1676 drive. Fieldwork was undertaken from 21st – 23rd March 2011. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+)

As reported in Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin on Monday, February 6, 2012 http://healtharticleof.blogspot.com/), the study found that a more moderate intake of diet soft drinks does not appear to be linked to a higher risk of “vascular events.”

Researchers in Miami looked at the relationship between both diet and regular soft drink consumption and risk of stroke, heart attack, and vascular death. They analyzed 2,564 people in a study designed to uncover how much influence stroke has on the population.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article reports that researchers assessed how often people drank diet and regular soft drinks. They counted the number of vascular events that occurred over a 10-year period. Then, they found that those who drank diet soft drinks daily were 43% more likely to have suffered a heart attack or stroke than those who drank none at all.

According to Doctors Health Press, “light” diet soft drink users and, amazingly, those who drank regular soda were not more likely to suffer vascular events. The results suggest a potential link between daily diet soft drink consumption and major events of the heart.

But how this happens is unclear. The researchers are calling, as usual, for further research before any conclusions can be drawn regarding the potential health consequences of diet soft drink consumption.

(SOURCE: Gardener, H., et al., “Diet soft drink consumption is associated with an increased risk of vascular events in the Northern Manhattan Study,” Journal of General Internal Medicine, Jan. 2012; DOI 10.1007/s11606-011-1968-2.)

Melville, NY (PRWEB) February 10, 2012

Attorneys Andres Alonso and David Krangle are proud to announce the formation of their new law firm, Alonso Krangle LLP. The new law firm will focus on fighting for the rights of serious personal injury victims around the country. Andy and David, attorneys with almost 40 years of collective legal experience, have concentrated their areas of law practice to the handling of significant personal injury cases, defective drug and medical device litigation, construction site accidents, nursing home abuse, medical negligence, qui tam/whistleblower actions and consumer fraud cases.

“The goal was to step away from the big firm atmosphere and build a law firm that operates on a more personal, human level. The relationships we have forged with our many clients over the years remain strong to this day. Bringing a case to a successful conclusion is more than just a “win” in our view. It is the first step along the long road our clients must travel to restore their lives, physically, financially and perhaps most important, emotionally. There is nothing more professionally rewarding than helping a client along that road. This level of service is the single most important guiding principle of the new firm,” David says reflecting on their decision.

While Andy and David are working with victims on many cases, Andy Alonso also currently serves as lead counsel in MDL 2051, In Re: Denture Cream Products Liability Litigation as well as serving as a member of Plaintiffs Steering Committees for MDL 2100, In Re: Yasmin and Yaz Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2197, In Re: Depuy Orthopedics Inc. ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation and MDL 2023 In Re: Bayer Corp. Combination Aspirin Products Marketing and Sales Practice Litigation. Previously, Andy Alonso has served on various committees and sub committees in complex litigations around the country. In addition to his MDL work, Mr. Alonso has tried numerous cases in State and Federal Courts resulting in Multi-Million dollar awards. In 2009, Andy Alonso received a jury award of 60 million dollars, one of the ten largest jury verdicts in the country that year.

David Krangle was the managing attorney for his prior firm’s new case department. He handled all new cases coming into the office and was responsible for screening hundreds of potential injury cases per day, and tens of thousands of potential intakes per year. David Krangle took the time to speak with new clients about their potential cases and determining their best course of legal action. David Krangle acted as the firm’s liaison with referring attorneys helping them evaluate their potential cases on behalf of their clients. David Krangle understands the importance of the relationship between law firms that have decided they will be referring cases to another firm, regularly staying in contact with them, and ensuring that their clients were/are taken care of. Second only to the relationship with the client is the relationship with law firms that honor us with their referrals. David Krangle was responsible for the firm’s qui tam/whistleblower litigation practice, where he represented one of the whistleblowers in the case against Pfizer. Pfizer executives had been accused of wrongly promoting several of their drugs. This off label promotion resulted in a then record breaking settlement of over 2 billion dollars. [bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=a4yV1nYxCGoA]

“We have had the privilege over the years of working with some of the finest lawyers and law firms in the country. Our new firm will strive to further strengthen the bonds we have formed with fellow lawyers who fight for civil and social justice on behalf of their clients,” David adds.

“By working side by side with so many different lawyers around the country, both on the litigation side as well as on referrals, we feel that our firm understands what is needed to best represent clients from across the country,” states Andy. “We are looking forward to the challenge and to the fight to help injured victims.”

The newly formed law firm of Alonso Krangle LLP, has their primary offices on Long Island, with additional offices in New York City and their soon to be offices in New Jersey.

San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) February 09, 2012

San Antonio’s newest high-volume pet partner, San Antonio Pets Alive! (SAPA!), has a new lifesaving partner in Best Friends Animal Society. The organization that runs the largest no-kill sanctuary in the country and operates life-saving animal welfare programs around the country has awarded SAPA! with a $ 300,000 grant to help the nonprofit reach their goal of at least 4,000 lives saved from Animal Care Services (ACS) in 2012.

A check presentation will be held at Animal Care Services (4710 State Highway 151) at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 9 with special guests Gregory Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, Dr. Ellen Jefferson, executive director of San Antonio Pets Alive! and Eric Walsh, Deputy City Manager.

Last month, San Antonio City Council voted to approve a partnership between ACS and SAPA! that allows SAPA! staff and volunteers to work hand-in-hand with ACS to help increase the number of animals saved at the city shelter and engage the community to adopt, foster and volunteer.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of such a high-profile organization in Best Friends Animal Society,” said Dr. Ellen Jefferson, executive director of San Antonio Pets Alive! “With the help of their grant, we believe that we can go one step further than saving the 4,000 animals outlined in the city contract, and can actually save all salvageable pets in San Antonio this year. We’ve proven that no-kill is possible in Austin, and we know the same can happen here, making San Antonio the largest city in the U.S. to achieve no-kill.”

SAPA! is confident they will be successful with this additional support, and is looking to the community to open their homes to just one more pet through adoption or fostering, as every life is counting on just one person to be a hero for them in the San Antonio community. The organization’s new slogan is “What number hero will you be?” and they firmly believe that if enough heroes come forward to help, San Antonio can reach a no-kill status in 2012.

“At Best Friends, we envision a time when there will be no more homeless pets, when all companion animals can live their lives in peace, without fear of being euthanized in a shelter,” said Gregory Castle, chief executive officer of Best Friends Animal Society. “We trust that our grant will not only get us a little closer to our mission-driven goal, but also go a long way toward helping the City of San Antonio blaze new trails in animal welfare and save more lives.”

Additionally, to kick off the partnership and get an early start on a Valentine’s Day celebration, ACS and SAPA! are hosting a “My Furry Valentine” adoption event beginning on Thursday, February 9 and going through Valentine’s Day (Tuesday, February 14). All animals will be available for reduced adoption fees of $ 35 during the time period.

About San Antonio Pets Alive!

San Antonio Pets Alive! (an offshoot of Austin Pets Alive!) is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to promoting and providing the resources, education and programs needed to eliminate the killing of companion animals. The organization’s purpose is two-fold: to provide the services needed to save the lives of the thousands of pets killed every year at city shelters and to prevent them from getting there in the first place. For more information, visit http://www.sanantoniopetsalive.org.

About Best Friends Animal Society®:
